1775
1775

The Continental Army

Cambridge, Massachusetts

On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress establishes the Continental Army and appoints George Washington as its commanding general. Farmers, blacksmiths, and tradesmen take up arms against the most powerful military on earth. They win.

The Seven Army Values

Loyalty. Duty. Respect. Service.

The Army Values spell out LDRSHIP: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These four pillars define what it means to wear the uniform every day.

LOYALTY

Bear true faith and allegiance

Loyalty is the foundation of trust. Bear true faith and allegiance to the U.S. Constitution, the Army, your unit, and fellow soldiers. Stand by them in good times and bad. Loyalty binds the force together when everything else falls apart.

DUTY

Fulfill your obligations

Duty means more than completing assigned tasks. It means being able to accomplish those tasks as part of a team. Carry out the full scope of your responsibilities to the best of your ability every single day, not because someone is watching, but because the mission depends on it.

RESPECT

Treat people as they should be treated

Respect begins with treating every person with dignity and worth. In the Army, you will work alongside soldiers from every walk of life. Rely on the golden rule. Recognize the contributions of everyone on the team, because strength comes from diversity.

SELFLESS SERVICE

Put the welfare of the nation first

Put the welfare of the nation, the Army, and your subordinates before your own. Selfless service is not about you. It is about the larger cause. Every soldier takes an oath to serve something greater than themselves, and that oath defines every action.
